Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to sign Timo Werner on a permanent basis this summer have taken a surprising turn. Despite having the option to make the loan deal permanent for around £15 million, sources close to the club have revealed that Spurs are now unlikely to exercise this option.
Werner, 28, joined Tottenham on loan from RB Leipzig in January and made 14 appearances, starting in 11 of them, and contributing two goals and three assists. However, it appears that Ange Postecoglou’s side has other plans in place to strengthen their attack.
Postecoglou recently confirmed that Tottenham are facing a deadline to activate the option to sign Werner permanently, but seemed nonchalant about the situation, saying, “I’m comfortable with that situation, and I’ll let the other guys steer it to see what kind of outcome there is.”
It’s believed that Tottenham have identified younger attacking options as their priority, and have drawn up a list of potential targets. This development suggests that Werner’s time at Spurs may be coming to an end, despite his decent performances in the second half of the 2023-24 campaign.
