Everton FC is wasting no time in getting a head start on the upcoming transfer window, set to open on June 14th. In a departure from their usual reckless spending habits, the Toffees are being cautious and strategic in their pursuit of new talent.
With the absence of billionaire backer Farhad Moshiri and the increased scrutiny of Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR), Everton is operating with limited financial flexibility.
Despite these challenges, the club is already exploring potential signings, including a surprise link to Weston McKennie, an American midfielder who had a disappointing spell with Leeds United.
According to Italian outlet Tutto Juve, Everton, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United are all “observing him carefully” with a potential price tag of €25m (£21m).
McKennie’s previous stint in the Premier League with Leeds United was underwhelming, to say the least.
He failed to impress in 19 appearances, contributing only one assist and struggling with creativity, passing accuracy, and defensive work rate. His performance raised questions about his value to any potential suitors.
Everton’s Director of Football, Kevin Thelwell, will need to weigh the risks and negotiate carefully, considering the club’s relegation worries and PSR constraints.
The same applies to Aston Villa and Newcastle United, who would also need to justify the expense. It remains to be seen if McKennie can revive his fortunes and convince any of these clubs to take a chance on him.
