According to Fabrizio Romano, Genoa has initiated contact with Tottenham Hotspur to discuss a permanent transfer for Djed Spence, following his loan spell at the Italian club last season.

Spence made 16 appearances for Genoa, totaling over 850 minutes on the pitch, and seemingly impressed the Serie A club during his time there.

Recently, BBC Sport reported that Genoa is interested in signing the English right-back on a permanent deal, but they are hesitant to trigger the £8.5m option-to-buy clause in their loan agreement.

Alasdair Gold also suggested that Tottenham might opt to sell Spence permanently this summer rather than pursuing another loan deal.

Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that Genoa has approached Tottenham about signing Spence, and negotiations are underway between the two clubs.

The deal’s outcome will depend on the price, indicating that Genoa is not willing to trigger the option-to-buy clause at this time. Romano tweeted, “Genoa have approached Tottenham to sign Djed Spence on a permanent transfer. Negotiations ongoing between the two clubs and player side, it will depend on the price.”

It appears that Djed Spence’s future at Tottenham is uncertain, and a permanent move away from the club might be the best option for both parties.

With Ange Postecoglou seemingly not favoring Spence, a reset in his career could benefit the player, and a permanent transfer would provide that opportunity. Tottenham, meanwhile, needs to be decisive in their rebuild, and letting go of Spence might be a necessary step in that process.
