In a shocking turn of events, Brenden Aaronson has reportedly decided to return to Leeds United, and the reasons behind his decision have now been revealed.
The 23-year-old American midfielder joined Leeds United in 2022 as Jesse Marsch’s first signing, costing a significant £25m. However, his time at Elland Road was marked by struggles, managing only one goal and three assists in 40 games.
Aaronson’s lack of confidence and physicality led to him being one of eight players who left the club last summer, utilizing a relegation loan clause.
Aaronson moved to Germany, joining Union Berlin, where he again struggled to find his footing, despite playing a crucial role in the team’s survival on the final day of the season.
However, in a surprise move, Aaronson has opted to return to Leeds United, citing “unfinished business” at Elland Road. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Aaronson rejected other offers from German clubs to make the return to Leeds.
Moreover, Bogert reports that Leeds United’s new manager, Daniel Farke, is keen to have Aaronson back and has already held a meeting with the player.
Farke is willing to give Aaronson a “key role” in the upcoming season’s promotion push. The decision to bring Aaronson back may come as a surprise, given that the club had previously indicated that players out on loan were unlikely to have a future at Leeds.
However, with Financial Fairplay restrictions tightening after the club’s failure to secure promotion, Leeds United has opted to retain Aaronson, considering his age and potential value. By keeping Aaronson, the club hopes he can build his value in the Championship next season.
