Everton defender Ben Godfrey is edging closer to leaving Goodison Park in the summer transfer window.

David Ornstein reported on June 26 that Serie A club Atalanta had made a bid to sign the 26-year-old defender, but it fell short of Everton’s £15m valuation.

Sky Italia journalist Gianluca di Marzio reported on 27 June that Atalanta had in fact offered around £6.7m to sign the centre-back.

The Toffees defender can play at either centre-back or right-back and Atalanta have made him one of their top targets this summer.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has a new piece of information on Godfrey. He says the Serie A club are close to completing a deal for the Toffees defender.

They made an official offer (value undisclosed) for the defender this morning and talks are now at an advanced stage. Godfrey wants to leave the club and move to Italy.

“Atalanta are close to agreeing terms with Everton defender Ben Godfrey. Atalanta submitted a formal offer this morning and talks are now at an advanced stage. Presumably Godfrey is keen on the move,” Sheth wrote on X (June 27).

The terms of the deals are still unclear at this point, but Everton are likely happy with Atalanta’s offer. Selling Godfrey will keep them within the PSR limits and then focus on buying more players in the summer window.

Everton have already sold Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa.

Last season, Godfrey initially struggled to break into Sean Dyche’s plans, but finished the season strongly, playing mostly at right-back. He has made 93 appearances for Everton since joining Norwich in 2016 and is no longer a key player for the club.

A move away from Goodison Park will suit all parties involved.
