Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph was seen as an option for Spain’s squad for the upcoming Paris Olympics, but the Whites have blocked his commitment to focus on pre-season.
Leeds’ pre-season schedule begins on Monday, with Daniel Farke having a reduced cohort due to ongoing international commitments at both Euro 2024 and the Copa America.
However, the players he works with must be firmly focused on achieving the goal 24/25.
Mateo Joseph is one of those who could be absent from Leeds Thorp Arch’s preparations due to international commitments, having enjoyed an interesting 12 months on that front.
Having previously played for England at youth level at Leeds, Joseph has confirmed his decision to return to Spain in 2024, which he has now locked up for good at the senior level, with implications for the upcoming Paris Olympics.
Spain were considering calling up the forward as his nationality was ratified by the IOC, but it has now been confirmed that he is not in their squad as the tournament overlaps heavily with Leeds’ pre-season run from July 24 to August 9 – the game for gold medal on Friday when the EFL season begins.
As the Olympic tournament does not fit into the FIFA calendar, Leeds and other clubs have the power to block their players from participating in the competition.
Injuries to Patrick Bamford and Georginio Rutter last pre-season opened the door for Joseph to start in the season opener against Cardiff City, but he picked up an ankle injury to frustratingly miss out on a big chance.
But a year more mature with goals under his belt as Leeds’ senior figure, he has the chance to make a mark with Farke and prove he is ready to take this side forward.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a Leeds supporter who wouldn’t want to see him back next season, and with the entire pre-season in an expanded role, he may be allowed to start as he wants to continue.
This could make him one of Germany’s main shot options in 24/25, which should be a huge opportunity for Joseph to take his chance.
Leeds United season ticket holders since 2013/14, currently in the middle of the FA5 buzz. From Pablo Hernandez to 5-1 dubs, I’ve seen it all at Elland Road.
