Leeds United could provide a vital attacking spark by bringing in Josh Sargent from Norwich City, says Alan Hutton.
Exclusive to Football Insider, the former Premier League defender said Sargent could bring a different quality to Leeds that they lacked at times last season as Daniel Farke’s side missed out on an immediate return to the Premier League.
Sargent, 24, is currently away with the USMNT for the Copa America before returning to pre-season training.
The American – who has scored 33 goals in 100 games so far for Norwich – previously worked at Carrow Road with Farke, and Football Insider reported last August that the German was exploring the possibility of a reunion with Sargent.
Sargent signed a contract with the Canaries last season until 2028, and would cost Leeds around £8m after that – which could be saved if the club manage to get the players off the books early this summer.
Leeds United can fill the gap with Sargent, says Hutton
Leeds United are expecting significant changes to their squad to take shape in the coming months, and Hutton believes he can fill the missing part of the team’s attacking dynamic with the signing of Sargent.
“[That presence up front] is what Leeds have lacked at times with the injured Patrick Bamford,” he said.
“I always thought they needed someone to come in and help.
“Sargent is a guy who knows the league, knows the coach, is very rugged and can last a season.
“They need options, but also for Leeds the important thing is who will leave.
Will Rutter go, Summerville? Gnonto? If you’re going to charge that next year, those players need to be replaced.
Time will tell if Sargent would be as productive as you need him to be.”
