🚨REPORT :West Ham United Player Reportedly Rejects Club Involved in Last-Minute Transfer Attempt, Citing Fan Abuse

Ipswich Town failed in a late attempt to hijack Flynn Downes’ exit from West Ham, according to Alex Crook.

   TalkSPORT reporter via X reported on July 16 that the promoted side rejected a late bid from the former midfielder before he made a definitive move back to Southampton.

   He spent the past season on loan at St.   Mary’s and Russell Martin were focused on bringing him back in the transfer window [The Sun, June 3].

   Downes joins Said Benrahma, Thilo Kehrer and Nathan Trott to leave on permanent deals this year, as well as Ben Johnson, Angelo Ogbonna and Divin Mubama, who have left after their contracts expired.

   As well as the fact that Downes seemingly thrived at Southampton last year, his decision may have been influenced by the negative treatment he received at Portman Road during the season as a Saints player.

   The midfielder told BBC Radio Solent on April 5 that the boos rained down on him from the stands during the 3-2 defeat were “mental” and admitted he was undone by the reaction.

   It appears to stem from his initial departure from Swansea City in 2021 and a situation the 25-year-old claimed fans had “no idea”.

   He leaves West Ham having never been given a proper chance under David Moyes and Julen Lopetegui was content to let him go in a deal worth up to £18m [The Athletic, July 16].

   There were talks with Southampton about a deal to bring Kyle Walker-Peters in the opposite direction in a swap [Fabrizio Romano, July 3] but the two players’ futures were ultimately separated.

   Interest in the London Stadium defender remains, so it remains to be seen whether that deal can be struck, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka also eyeing an increasingly viable option from Manchester United.
