One player surprised many Tottenham Hotspur fans with his performance in the friendly against Hearts.
Ange Postecoglou’s pre-season is in full swing and his side have already picked up two big wins, albeit against inferior teams.
Tottenham beat Cambridge United 7-2 in a friendly behind closed doors last week and recorded a stunning 5-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle Park on Wednesday night.
A number of Spurs players have impressed in Scotland, but one in particular may have saved his Tottenham career with his performance against the SPFL side.
Grandpa Spence produces a stunning performance for Tottenham against Hearts
Tottenham have signed Djed Spence from Middlesbrough for up to £20m in the summer of 2022 (Sky Sports).
The talented back was seen as a fantastic signing at the time. Spurs beat off a number of top clubs in their pursuit of him two years ago.
However, Antonio Conte was not impressed with Spence at Tottenham and he has barely featured since – making just six appearances for the north London seniors.
After a successful loan spell in Italy last season, everything pointed to a permanent move to Genoa this window. They even had the option to buy him out.
However, Spence returned to Tottenham training after the collapse of the transfer and was given his chance by Postecoglou against Hearts.
The “amazing” 23-year-old put in a truly outstanding performance. He scored a goal and got an assist in the second half and looked incredibly solid.
TBR Football rated Spence 10/10Â for his performance on Wednesday night and that display may have just saved his career at Tottenham.
Everyone expected Spence to be sold this summer, but he has now given Postecoglou reason to think, who may decide to keep him.
Spence has shown that he is better than the current Tottenham player
Tottenham had a great win against Hearts but they had to work hard.
The Scottish team were prepared, with the Spurs defense giving them little chance. Brandon Austin made an incredible save.
Hearts scored the only goal of the game in the 46th minute after a mistake by Emerson Royal at the back. The Brazilian has done a few in his Spurs career.
Emerson has publicly claimed he is unhappy at Tottenham and is expected to be sold in the coming weeks.
This opens the door for Spence to secure a place in the team and if he continues to perform well in pre-season, Postecoglou may be tempted to keep him.
This would help Tottenham save millions by not having to sign a new right-back to replace Emerson.
