In a recent interview, Leeds United manager Daniel Farke explained the motivations behind Max Wober and Brenden Aaronson’s returns to the club.

Brenden Aaronson and Max Wober have returned from last year’s loan to form part of Daniel Farke’s squad.

   Whites boss Daniel Farke has explained the changes that have seen Brenden Aaronson and Max Wober return from loan spells for second chances at his Leeds United side.

   Aaronson and Wober were among a host of players who left Leeds due to the relegation clause when they were relegated to the Championship last summer, with Aaronson joining Union Berlin and Wober signing for Borussia Mönchengladbach.

   Most of the players who have left have now either sealed permanent exits or, in the cases of Jack Harrison and Rasmus Kristensen, gone another season away from Elland Road on loan.

   However, Aaronson and Wober have returned to Farke’s squad and both are among the group that flew to Germany for the club’s pre-season training camp.

   Both players missed Friday night’s friendly at Harrogate Town following international duty this summer, but Farke later confirmed both players were returning – and explained why.

   After the game, Farke was asked what he made of Aaronson and Wober — and why he thought they could be a factor for him next season.

   Farke admitted that both players will now have to convince with hard work and strong performances: “I think the decision was more or less, especially with Brenden, made last season before I came into the building, and with Max it was also  more or less the first few days, but we barely did any real training together.

   “Also, my conversations with the players were very important, so I wanted to get that sense of, ‘okay, they’re really desperate to come back and they’re really ready to go’. Mentally, too.

   “Obviously they were included in the team the season before the relegation and we know we also had a few players who took quite a bit of criticism and a few knocks afterwards.

   “It’s quite normal when I think about the state Georginio Rutter was in when I arrived, or a player like Illan Meslier or even Cree Summerville, and what they did last season was outstanding and everyone more or  less sing their name.

   “For me, the attitude and mindset of the player is important. In our conversations, I got the feeling that both Max and Brenden really wanted desperately to return and they also appreciated what they had and also wanted to repay the club, the trust was shown in those  , who once spent a lot of money to get them.

   “But again, this decision to come back is one thing, but they still have to convince with hard work, with performances in friendlies and also in matches.

   “Obviously they came back a bit late because of the tournaments which are always a bit difficult, so maybe we have to be a bit patient until they get back to their best form.

   “But in general, I got the feeling that they can help a lot during the season and I hope they can also repay the trust they put in us.”
