Lewis O’Brien’s Nottingham Forest nightmare looks set to end with the midfielder set to head overseas to revive his career.

O’Brien joined from Huddersfield Town following the Reds’ success two years ago, but hopes of playing in the Premier League soon turned to dust.

His first campaign at the City Ground was cut short by illness and he joined DC United on loan in March 2023 after a move to Blackburn Rovers controversially fell through.

The 25-year-old now looks set to return to the US to find a new club after a loan spell at Middlesbrough last term failed to turn into a permanent move.

Transfer expert Alan Nixon claims Forest have approved O’Brien to join LAFC on loan from MLS in a move worth £5m.

Nixon, the Sun’s self-proclaimed Boss of Goss, reports: “O’Brien enjoyed a successful spell under Wayne Rooney at DC United and will try his luck again with high-flying LAFC.

“The midfield dynamo is no longer in the plans for next season at the City Ground and it is only right that he returns to America.”

O’Brien has had no shortage of suitors this summer as Forest look to cut Nuna Espirito Santo’s squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Top-flight Ipswich Town, relegated Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United, as well as Championship team-mates Preston North End and Norwich City have all been linked with an interest but prefer to take the player on loan while Forest look to sell.    But Nixon adds, “Being able to play and live in the U.S. won out.”

Speaking about his time at Forest ahead of his loan move to Boro last season, O’Brien said: “I want to challenge myself again and I definitely want to prove some people wrong.

“My career path was on the rise at one point and then it slowed down and things went wrong and I just feel like I still have somewhere to go and prove that I can get to those places.

“There were external factors that contributed to the things that happened – it wasn’t that I wasn’t good at football or whatever people think. I just want to go on the pitch and show people what I can do.”
