Brighton could pull off a real coup by bringing the World Cup-winning defender to the AMEX Stadium this summer.
The Seagulls are set to make a number of changes after Roberto de Zerbi left to be replaced by Fabian Hurzeler. The 31-year-old is now the youngest Premier League manager to leave St Pauli, having guided them to promotion to the Bundesliga last season.
It’s been a busy summer on the south coast with Yankubo Minteh, Matts Wieffer, Ibrahim Osman and Malick Junior Yalcouye all signings, continuing Brighton’s record youth signings.
Hurzeler and Hummels in recent days. On the Brighton project, Hummel’s ambition and more. Brighton are very open to signing Hummels as an experienced centre-back. For 35 years, he has not yet made a final decision about continuing or ending his career.”
Hummels started his career at Bayern Munich but made his name at Dortmund before returning to Bayern and later a second spell at Signal Iduna Park.
Last season, he helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final, which they lost to Real Madrid at Wembley in June.
Hummels on Brighton’s radar after leaving Dortmund
Before leaving the club, he suggested he would stay in Europe and strengthen the possibility of a move to the Premier League.
“I’m ruling out a transfer overseas, to the US or something like that,” he said. “
“If I leave Borussia Dortmund, I will go to another European country, my son has a very big role in this. That’s why I say clearly that adventures like the USA are out of the question for me. If I move, I would stay in Europe.”
Hummels would offer the Brighton squad vital experience if he were to join, especially following the departures of two senior statesmen in Adam Lallana, who returned to Southampton, and Pascal Gross, who moved to Dortmund.
Four years older than his future manager, Hummels would certainly be a key voice in the Brighton dressing room alongside Lewis Dunk, the captain who returns to the side after helping England to the Euro 2024 final, which they lost to Spain.
