Newcastle United will endure more frustration in their bid to sign Marco Guehi from Crystal Palace.
The Magpies are keen to bring the 24-year-old to St James’ Park, while Newcastle have made a fourth bid for Marco Guehi.
It was believed that this offer would be enough for Crystal Palace to say yes, with Paul Mitchell proposing a deal worth almost £65m. This would make him Newcastle’s most expensive signing to date, surpassing Alexander Isak’s £63m in 2022.
It’s been a frustrating transfer saga for Toon fans, but Friday morning raised hopes that a positive conclusion was on the horizon.
But that hope now seems to be fading.
New Newcastle bid for Marco Guehi to be rejected
After Newcastle’s fourth bid for Guehi, Crystal Palace sent a response.
According to the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, Newcastle’s £65million bid for Guehi will fail and will need to be improved to bring the centre-back to Tyneside.
On X, he wrote: “Newcastle’s fourth £65m bid for Marco Guehi will fail. Needs improvement. Newcastle sports catalog Paul Mitchell is now considering his options.”
Elsewhere, the Telegraph reported that Newcastle are still falling short of Crystal Palace’s valuation of Guehi, with the Eagles looking for more than £70m.
It may be time for Newcastle to look elsewhere
If an offer worth almost £65m is not going to be enough, then it may be time for Newcastle United to look elsewhere.
The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel said Toons sporting director Paul Mitchell is assessing his options after he looked set to make his first major signing at St James’ Park.
Instead, he may have to look at alternatives. But it is not clear who Newcastle can turn to.
Malick Thiaw is a possibility, having been linked with Newcastle before the Guehi saga began.
But the Geordie Boot Boys said Thiaw may no longer be available, with AC Milan expected to sell another centre-back instead. Pierre Kalulu could be on the verge of a move to Juventus, which would rule out the possibility of Thiaw leaving San Siro as well.
This search for a center back has been an ugly situation and it’s only getting uglier.
The Magpies will again not make a bid, further proof that Newcastle’s biggest problem with Guehi is the asking price, not the fear of piqued their interest.
What Oliver Glasner said about Marco Guehi’s future
It appears that Guehi will not be leaving for Newcastle United. Instead, he will remain with Crystal Palace, who take on Brentford in the opening game of the Premier League season on Sunday.
Before this game, Oliver Glasner spoke to the media and talked about Guehi’s future.
“Marc trained with us today,” he said.
“We spoke together. I have no other information. I’ll have to look at my bank account to see if anything has arrived – but it doesn’t look like it!
“So yes, Marco and I are planning. He’s our player and our captain. I can’t tell you anything else.
“I don’t know how the president defines superstar money, so that’s a question we should be asking.”
