The Magpies almost signed Joe Gomez in June when they almost allowed Anthony Gordon to join Liverpool in a bid to solve their PSR nightmare.
Newcastle offered Gordon to Liverpool and a deal was almost done to see Gomez move the other way.
Joe Gomez has been interested in signing for Newcastle and both players have received medicals in Germany as they represent England at Euro 2024.
Fortunately for Toon fans, the deal fell through as Newcastle United found another way to pursue PSR. Gordon is still at St James’ Park, despite suggestions that his head has been turned by the prospect of a move to Liverpool.
Joe Gomez is available after the collapse of Marco Guehi’s contract
Instead of Gomez, Newcastle targeted Marco Guehi. He was a top target for centre-back Eddie Howe, but a deal now appears highly unlikely.
Newcastle pulled out of a deal for Guehi and Paul Mitchell was unable to agree a fee for the 24-year-old with Crystal Palace. The Geordie Boot Boys say Crystal Palace want £75m for Guehi, with Newcastle’s latest bid worth £70m.
This resulted in a deal being scrapped, leaving Toon officials scrambling to sign the centre-back.
Newcastle are open for business on deadline day but will not be panic buying. They won’t sign players they don’t see as prime targets, which could be bad news for those keen to see Joe Gomez move to St James’ Park.
Newcastle are unlikely to target Joe Gomez in the transfer window
According to Athletico, Gomez could leave Liverpool on transfer deadline day as the 27-year-old is deeply out of favor under Arne Sloto.
But while the defender could make a late move away from Anfield, Athletic add that Newcastle are unlikely to show any interest in Gomez.
This is not a huge surprise and sums up Newcastle’s desire not to panic despite the need for arrivals.
Although Gomez is a good defender, he is not a huge improvement over what Eddie Howe already has. Its versatility makes it attractive, but it would only be an in-between.
That’s not what Newcastle are looking for, so Gomez will have to hope that another club is interested in him before the transfer window closes at 11pm.
Newcastle’s previous interest in Gomez stemmed from Gordon’s imminent move to Liverpool.
No deal was reached, but there is now more interest in Newcastle United’s number 10.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are interested in signing Gordon from Newcastle.
However, they add that the winger will remain at St James’ Park, and the club and the player are in talks over a contract extension.
