Jeff Stelling believes the noise surrounding Everton’s potential sacking of Sean Dyche is “nonsense”.
Stelling and Ally McCoist spoke live on talkSPORT (September 3) about where the Toffees are going after the disappointing defeat to Bournemouth on August 31.
Despite taking the lead in the 87th minute, the Toffees somehow managed to wipe out a two-goal lead to miss their first Premier League point of the season.
Stelling said he would “reserve judgement” on whether they retain their Premier League status this season, but shared his judgment on Dyche’s future.
“I reserve the right to judge whether they will be OK, but one thing I will not reserve is that talking about getting rid of Sean Dyche at this stage is stupid,” he said.
“They were by far the better side for most of that game against Bournemouth.”
What’s next for Sean Dyche and Everton
Despite Everton making an incredibly poor start to their Premier League season, the Toffees dominated the first 80 minutes of their clash against the Cherries.
Tim Iroegbunam and Iliman Ndiaye were undoubtedly the stars of the show [Connor O’Neill, September 2, 33:53], but towards the end of the game, they and their team-mates looked tired.
This not only shows that the recruitment the Toffees made in the summer has benefited the team, but it also shows that things could now start to turn around.
Dyche did an excellent job in difficult circumstances last season and while he cannot be absolved of the blame for the debacle at Bournemouth, he still has plenty of credit in the bank for now.
McCoist also touched on the potential return of David Moyes [talkSPORT, September 3], but really that situation is better left untouched and consigned to history.
If the poor run continues there will no doubt be a lot more talk about Dyche’s future, but for now it seems better to stick with the 53-year-old.
