Alan Shearer was told he acted “like a weasel” after being mobbed by Sunderland fans. The Newcastle United legend found himself in a very awkward position on Saturday.
After attending a friend’s wedding in Italy, Shearer and his family are expected to fly back to their hometown. But the cancellation meant they had to go to Heathrow instead before catching a train north.
Unfortunately for him, it coincided with the return of the Black Cats fans after the 3-1 win at Portsmouth. Shearer admitted earlier this week that he was “devastated” during the four-hour journey and kept his head down throughout.
His co-conspirator Micah Richards has since teased him about his behavior. Speaking on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards said: “How funny, you give Al a big ‘this Sunderland, this Sunderland’. But when he was on the train you were hiding like a little weasel.”
Shearer took it in good spirit and laughed as presenter Gary Lineker joked: “You know what’s worse, Micah? He snuck off to the toilet and put on a Sunderland shirt.”
“I was absolutely desperate for the toilet, I couldn’t move. I was scared to go to the toilet,” reiterated Shearer, who was at least rewarded for his ordeal by watching his beloved side win 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. .
He sent a “f*** you” message to concerned Sunderland fans after first recounting the horrific experience to his Match of the Day colleagues and podcast Richards and Lineker, saying: “Gary, Micah, I’ve had an absolute disaster, I sat there thinking , that you will like it very much.
“We’re not in first class, we’re in coach and I’m looking and I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God’, Sunderland have played away to Portsmouth. So I’ve got my cap on and I’m huddled in the corner of the bus and when they come on it gets busier and there’s not an empty seat [and] the whole aisle is taken up by Sunderland fans shouting p****d and everyone comes with their beer bottles.
“For half an hour I can’t even lift my head. I’m scared because I think it’s full of them because they’re all in a great mood, their team has just won and they start singing Newcastle songs, then they start singing Shearer songs – ‘Shearer, Alan Shearer , oh what can it mean sad Geordie…’
“I can’t even sing the other song they sang, my neck was killing me, I couldn’t lift my head. I was afraid to leave the station, nobody recognized me.
“I didn’t move at all for four hours and they didn’t even notice me and they just sang and cussed me out for four hours. So for all the Sunderland fans traveling back with Coach C, damn, I hear you all.”
Sunderland are looking forward to joining their perennial rivals in the Premier League and are currently top of the Championship table, with their latest victory maintaining their perfect start to the fourth game of the season.
