Former Everton boss Keith Wyness has insisted he “wouldn’t even consider” sacking Sean Dyche if he was still involved at the club.
In a new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was managing director at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, insisted the Merseysiders will not be involved in the fight for relegation this season under the former Burnley boss.
Dyche’s Everton are bottom of the Premier League with zero points and have conceded 10 goals in their first three games.
It comes amid shocked interest from some in the Everton hierarchy to return to the club’s esteemed former manager David Moyes, who has been out of work since leaving West Ham in the summer.
The Toffees let go of a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Bournemouth with just three minutes of regular time remaining on Saturday (August 31).
Everton next play Aston Villa on September 14.
Keith Wyness believes Everton should not have sacked Dyche
Dyche, who is under contract until the end of this season, finished 17th and 15th during his time at Goodison.
Wyness told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “If I was still involved with the club I wouldn’t even think about moving Dyche.
“In the last two seasons he has shown that he has been the most important person holding the club together.
“He’s managed that with Kevin Thelwell, despite the two owners being absent at the helm.
“Dyche has done a fantastic job.
“I think he deserves time from the fans to change that with a new team and I think he will.
“It’s right for the relegation battle, but I don’t think we’ll be there.
“This start will soon be in the rearview mirror. If you subtracted the points taken from last season, they would be in the middle of the table – and that’s what we should be aiming for this year.
“I realize we have to move on, but I’m sure we will.”
