Neal Maupay (28) spoke about his departure from FC Everton at his first press conference as an Olympique de Marseille player.

It was clear there was not much love between Maupay and the English club as the striker neared an exit in the summer. Maupay has struggled to adapt to life at Everton and has managed just one point since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022. The day before his loan move (which has a buy-back clause), it was confirmed that the striker had been browsing the hive on his social media. .

In response to Fabrizio Romano’s tweet announcing that Marseille and Everton had agreed a deal, the striker posted a clip from The Shawshank Redemption where protagonist Andy Dufresne escapes from prison. The allusion was clear and some of the reactions to his post were loud.

Today, Maupay is ready to explain why he posted the video in his first press conference for Marseille: “The fans like to discuss, criticize and celebrate and that doesn’t bother me because I consider myself a normal person and if anyone can tweet, I can.”

“I posted a funny little video because my situation at Everton was known, I wanted to leave and the club didn’t want to keep me. So this little video was to say that I was relieved to leave the club,” Maupay concluded.
