Leeds United fans were stunned by Wilfried Gnonto’s performance for Italy Under-21s in their win against Norway on September 10.
It was a comfortable 3-0 win for Italy’s young side in the European Under-21 Championship qualifier thanks to a hat-trick from Roma’s Tommaso Baldanzi.
However, Leeds fans were quick to notice that Gnonto was playing a different role to the one he has at Elland Road – as a number ten behind the striker.
Usually deployed on either side of the attack for Leeds, it was a new role for the forward, who bagged an assist as his side cruised to victory.
Daniel Farke’s side have often struggled to find a natural alternative for the role, particularly following the departure of Georginio Rutter, but many now believe Gnonto could fill the gap.
Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe were given temporary options, while the return of Brenden Aaronson and the signing of Ao Tanaka bolstered the position.
Still, with Gnonta’s newfound role, many fans suggest he could become first choice through the middle.
In theory, this would allow newcomers Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon to start alongside Gnont instead of competing for his spot.
Leeds United fans were delighted with what they saw from Wilfried Gnont on international duty
Gnonto has become one of Leeds’ most important players following the departures of Rutter, Crysenicia Summerville and Archie Gray in the summer.
His performances have attracted interest from clubs across Europe and the Premier League, but after staying at Elland Road, Leeds hope he can lead them to promotion.
Following his appearance for Italy’s under-21 national team, with footage of his assist shared on social media, Gnonta fans are calling for him to take on a new role.
Others praised the Italian for his performance during the international break.
