Crystal Palace welcomed back the former player during the 2-2 draw with Leicester on Saturday.
Despite being the better team against Leicester City, the wait for a first win of the season continues for Crystal Palace after only managing a 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park.
Jean-Philippe Mateta was in the game and salvaged a point from the encounter, despite the Eagles trailing for most of the game.
Eddie Nketiah made his debut in the game and wowed the fans – while Maxence Lacroix also paid tribute to Crystal Palace.
But this game didn’t just feature debuts, it also saw the return of a former Eagles star.
How Jean-Philippe Matera reacted to Jordan Ayew’s arrival for Leicester
Against Leicester, the Eagles were clearly the better side, but that will be of no consolation to Oliver Glasner, who are now without a win in four games.
But it was Leicester who disappointed the Eagles on Saturday – after a summer in which Steve Cooper’s side took two players from Crystal Palace.
Leicester have signed Odsonne Edouard on loan from Crystal Palace – so he was not involved in this game.
But Jordan Ayew was sold to the Foxes and started on the right wing for Cooper’s side – although he had very little success as Tyricck Mitchell shut him down.
Ayew was withdrawn in the 83rd minute of the match, as he was leaving, Mateta ran up to the former Eagles ace and high-fived him.
The pair were always very close when they were at Selhurst Park, so it’s no shock to see them on the pitch with each other.
Oliver Glasner has a job at Crystal Palace
Ahead of this season, expectations were high for what Crystal Palace could achieve, not least because of their impressive run of wins towards the end of the 2023/24 season.
This has left ambitions high for this season, with the goal of European football following Daichi Kamada.
In many ways, Glasner is a victim of his own success, and as a result, his poor start to the season is almost inflated.
Crystal Palace deservedly won against Leicester and if they got the three points the thinking would be positive with four points.
Still, there’s a lot of work to be done, Glasner needs to figure out his top three — something he’s struggled to do so far.
Despite Mateta’s scoring form, he may have to be absent for the good of the team.
