Nottingham Forest’s first win at Liverpool since 1969 prompted predictable comparisons to sending a man to the moon, but Saturday was the story of Nun Espirito Santo and his struggling Reds.

Both teams entered this game unbeaten, but the hosts are yet to concede a goal and bounced back from a humiliating Manchester United at Old Trafford after the international break.

But Forest are no respecters of tradition and a brilliant performance ensured they achieved the feat, even surpassing Brian Clough’s excellent Reds side.

The 2024 version of Nunn first held off Liverpool and then struck, with substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi unleashing a superb strike on 72 minutes to secure a 1-0 win.

After enduring some puns from Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker about moon landings and enough space for Hudson-Odoi to grab the winning goal, pundit Alan Shearer got down to serious business analyzing what was undoubtedly Forest’s biggest win since just over  returned to the Premier League two seasons ago.

He said: “They were absolutely fantastic. They had a game plan from start to finish and it worked to perfection.

“You have to be almost perfect at Anfield in the kind of form Liverpool and Forest were.

“There was no way through, no gaps, no gaps in the middle. They were really tight, really compact and that was a constant all afternoon.

“Liverpool became so frustrated with how well Forest played, how difficult they made it.”

Regarding the winner, Shearer added: “Liverpool are on the attack. [Nikola] Milenkovic is too strong for Darwin Nunez and wins the ball, but just look at how they break.

“It’s Anthony Elanga, who came on as a substitute, on Hudson-Odoi, who came on as a substitute – and what a pass into it. You can say what you want about Liverpool’s defense but it’s a brilliant goal, end to end and it’s on the last  sides of the grid.

“It was no fluke. It was fully deserved. What a win for Nuna and what an afternoon for the Forest fans. Two wins, two draws and a great start to the season.”
