James Garner could be set to start at right-back after Sean Dyche praised his performance in Everton’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City. The midfielder was told on the morning of the match that he would be used to repair the injury-hit back line.
While Stephy Mavididi caused Everton problems on the right throughout the match, Dyche praised Garner for his “fantastic” performance – especially considering he was one of several players to fall ill during the week.
The right-back dilemma will be one of a number of big talking points for the Blues boss as he prepares for next week’s crucial clash with Crystal Palace.
Dyche will be hoping to be boosted by the return of Vitaly Mykolenko and Idriss Gueye, while a group of players who have battled illness and injury this week should be stronger ahead of Saturday’s game at Goodison Park.
Seamus Coleman is a doubt for the visit of Palace as the hamstring injury he suffered on international duty is more serious than first thought. Nathan Patterson took a step towards returning from hamstring surgery by playing for the U-21s on Sunday, but Dyche hinted that both he and fellow long-term absentee Jarrad Branthwaite may need time to reach match fitness.
That would leave Dyche to choose between academy youngster Roman Dixon, Ashley Young and Garner as he prepares for another crucial game as Everton are without a win in five Premier League games.
Garner has played at right-back for the Blues and England U-21s, and director of football Kevin Thelwell mentioned the former Manchester United man as an option in that part of the pitch last week.
Young could challenge him if Mykolenko returns. The Ukraine international left Aston Villa ill seven days earlier and missed the Carabao Cup defeat to Southampton.
They hoped that he would come to reign, but he did not succeed. If he is available this weekend, he would offer a significant boost to a defense that has been hit by injuries this summer.
In defence, where Dyche will face continued calls to bring in Jake O’Brien’s summer signing, the big question will be what to do with his midfield.
The Everton manager has heaped praise on new signing Tim Iroegbunam but said on Saturday that the youngster had seen more action than originally thought so early in his career at Goodison.
A first Premier League start for Orel Mangala and the decision to drop Abdoulaye Doucoure deeper gave Everton more resilience in midfield and Dyche was happy with both at Leicester.
Their display may encourage him to keep Garner at right-back and Iroegbunam on the bench, but if Gueye is back available after his father’s death, Dyche will have to consider breaking the partnership of Mangala and Doucoure to field his most experienced midfielder.
Jack Harrison started on the bench for the Midlands and was another player affected by illness this week, while Dyche was pleased to see Jesper Lindström start his second game in a row.
Like against Southampton in midweek, the Denmark international wasted chances but his pace made him a consistent threat and an outlet to relieve pressure on the defence.
Dyche is a big fan of Harrison but could be tempted to start next week with the same dynamic forward line that has repeatedly caused Leicester problems.
