Referee Anthony Taylor has been embroiled in controversy again after receiving three red cards in the space of one minute during Nottingham Forest’s win over Brighton.

   Taylor was the fourth official in the game after being sacked last weekend after being targeted by online trolls following the Bournemouth v Chelsea game.    On this occasion, the 45-year-old handed out a record 14 yellow cards and another two to the coaching staff.

   Disgusting abuse was hurled in his direction on social media, with some users threatening the official and his family with death.    The Premier League planned to investigate the abuse and Taylor was also offered the support of PGMOL.

   The referee could be forgiven for wanting a quiet weekend, but he was again at the fore when Morgan Gibbs-White was sent off for a second yellow card.    The former Wolves midfielder launched a reckless challenge from behind on Seagulls forward Joao Pedro.

   Rob Jones, the match referee, indicated that the Forest star had got his hands on the ball immediately after the tackle, but he was shown a second yellow card shortly after for the action.    Gibbs-White was in disbelief at the decision and after trying to calm Jones down, he was seen shouting at Taylor on his way off the pitch.

   In the incident, both Fabian Hurzeler and Nuno Espirito Santo were ordered to step.    The former appeared to lose his composure at the initial passivity of the decision-making, before the latter took out his frustration on Taylor and then Jones when red was awarded.

   “The referee awarded a second yellow card to Gibbs-White for a reckless challenge on Pedro,” explained the Premier League Match Center social media account.    “Fabian Hürzeler and Nuno Espírito Santo were both sent off for unacceptable technical behavior following the incident.”

   Santos’ assistant Rui Pedro Silva was also warned, and he spoke to the media after the draw (2:2).    “From my perspective from the bench, I think Morgan’s offense was a little bit quick, but he touched the ball,” he said.

   “So at that moment I didn’t think it was a second yellow card. I was at the back, I didn’t know what Anthony Taylor heard from the coaches that he gave a red card twice. For me it’s not a second yellow. I understand that they want to control the emotions on  bench, job done, game over.”

   Brighton manager Andrew Crofts admitted they were “upset” by Gibbs-White’s challenge on Pedro.    “The treatment of Joao looked like it wasn’t great,” Crofts said.

   “We were upset about it. The reaction was to see what the referee was doing. I didn’t see it because I was communicating with the player. The next thing I saw was red cards to the coaches.”
