Leeds United have two free agents who can sign pre-contracts when the January transfer window opens in a few months’ time. One of them is Junior Firpo and as the stats show, if the Whites lose him it will be a huge blow to their attack.
Currently, barring undisclosed extension triggers, Firp’s contract will expire next June. In addition, the player can sign a pre-contract when the January window opens in a few months.
Losing Firp for nothing will also be a financial blow as paying between £10m and £15m to take him away from Barcelona would be a significant blow. Furthermore, losing the 28-year-old will be a huge blow to their attack.
Junior Firp’s importance to Leeds’ attack
If the Whites lose their right-back and he leaves as a free agent, their attack will be in serious jeopardy. LUFCDATA has informed X that Firpo has made more tackles in the attacking third than any other Championship player in the 2024-25 season (168).
Last week, Leeds manager Daniel Farke commented on the future of the two defenders. However, he noted that with so much going on in the summer window and the start of the 2024-25 league season, he had not considered the contract situations of Firp and Sam Byram.
“To be honest, I haven’t thought about that scenario until now because it’s been such a difficult summer and we’ve had other things to talk about,” Farke said in his pre-match press conference with Cardiff City. “There will come a time when we talk about the future.
“Also, you know how much I value Junior and Sam, how important they are to us. Also with their personalities. Talking about Junior, especially the last game against Burnley, after a long journey he also played a really good game.”
Since joining Leeds in 2021, Firpo has made 91 appearances for the Whites, scoring two goals and registering 13 assists. It will be interesting to see if Leeds can secure the player a long-term deal, or if he may want to test free agency and start a new chapter in his career elsewhere.
