Oliver Skipp reveals which Leicester City player ‘deserved’ to be on winning team vs AFC Bournemouth

Steve Cooper claimed his first Premier League win as Leicester City manager at the seventh attempt as the Foxes beat AFC Bournemouth 1-0 on Saturday.

Facundo Buonanotte scored the only goal of the game before receiving a surprise call-up to Argentina’s senior squad this international break.

This win also took Leicester City to 15th in the league ahead of three very winnable games against Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.

The three points and clean sheet helped ease the pressure that had been building on Steve Cooper, especially given how often clubs decide to change managers during the international break.

There were quite a few good performances against Bournemouth and Oliver Skipp found a teammate who deserved to be on the winning side.

Oliver Skipp sets up Mads Hermansen for Leicester City

Cooper was keen to secure Skipp’s services this summer and eyebrows were raised when Leicester agreed to pay up to £25million for the midfielder.

Skipp partnered Wilfred Ndidi in Leicester’s midfield against Bournemouth, with Harry Winks a surprise drop from the side and Jordan Ayew playing in an attacking midfield role.

Skipp put in a solid performance but told Leicester’s media team after the game that he felt goalkeeper Mads Hermansen deserved a win and a clean sheet for his heroics despite conceding four goals at Arsenal last week.

Skipp said: “I think Mads deserved it after last week and the backs were brilliant, the field in particular defended brilliantly all game and the whole team.

“We knew how important the defensemen were going to be. It’s a collective effort when you get that clean sheet, so we’re happy with that.”

Leicester City can build on Bournemouth’s win

A first league win of the season took a very big weight off Cooper’s shoulders and the fact that they are 15th means that on paper it can be considered a relatively good start.

The next three games will tell a lot more about Leicester’s chances of survival, but for now Cooper is doing the job he was brought in to do.

Leicester fans may still be a little skeptical of the Welshman, but he has the unenviable task of steadying the ship following the departures of Enzo Maresca and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall this summer.

He may be a bit more ambitious at times, but ultimately Cooper will do a very good job of keeping Leicester in the Premier League this season.
