Impressive’, ‘Dangerous’ – National media lauds West Ham gem after what he did in International duty

Callum Marshall was in fine form as the West Ham United youngster featured in Northern Ireland’s 5-0 win over Bulgaria on Tuesday (15 October).

   Although he was unable to get on the scoresheet at Windsor Park, the 19-year-old forward played a key role as Northern Ireland picked up an important three points in the Nations League.

   Marshall has enjoyed a mixed start to the 2024/25 campaign, scoring on his debut for Huddersfield Town, but recently struggled against Belarus and was substituted after 67 minutes.

   Belfast Telegraph [15  October] rated Marshall 7/10 and wrote: “From a corner his passing speed and work was impressive and he almost hit the target with a dangerous cross. Good movement and awareness.

   BelfastLive [15.  October] agreed with a 7/10 rating, writing: “Worked hard down the left and came close to the first goal.”

   The young striker was far from impressive in the 0-0 draw against Belarus on Saturday (12 October) and has been criticized for his display on the international stage.

   Marshall doesn’t seem ready to make the step up to the first team at the London Stadium just yet, although his move to the John Smiths Stadium is key to his development.

   With one goal and one assist in his first nine Ligue 1 appearances, it’s a far cry from his failed move to West Brom last season, but Julen Lopetegui will need to see more from the 19-year-old.

   Of course, he will be looking to build on his West Ham debut from last season and feature as a substitute in the FA Cup, but it could be a long time before the new manager gives him a chance.

   If he continues to improve and impress on the international stage with Northern Ireland, it will be that much easier for Marshall to secure more playing time at the London Stadium.
