‘Always’ – Brighton striker Danny Welbeck reacts to latest Man United transfer link

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck has said the latest link with a move to Manchester United is mere speculation as his good form for the Seagulls continues.

   Welbeck, 33, has been superb for Brighton this season with six goals and two assists for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

   The former United and Arsenal striker joined the Seagulls on a free transfer in 2020 and has a total of 32 goals for the club – three more than he scored for United.

   Welbeck spent a total of six years at Old Trafford before moving to Arsenal in 2014.  The striker is highly regarded at United and was linked with a return to Old Trafford last summer as then manager Erik ten Haag looked to strengthen his attacking force.

   “It’s speculation,” Welbeck told the Argus exclusively as part of a small American Express store promotion.    “There’s always that connection for me because I was at Man United, I got there, so it’s always easy to make that connection. But I just focus on what I can control. All the other stuff is pretty irrelevant.”

   Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler has been very impressed with his experienced forward this season and believes Welbeck can play for many years to come.

   “If he continues to behave the way he is then he will be able to play for a long time,” the German said after last month’s win over Newcastle.    We have another player [James Milner] who is almost 40 years old and still tries to be the best every day.    The same goes for Danny.

   “I knew [when I arrived] that he has great talent and is a great team-mate and very supportive. He’s not only a great footballer, but a great team-mate and personality.

   “He has a feel for team dynamics and tries to connect the players.    It’s very important to me.”
